COLUMBIA, Mo.– Registration is open for students 12 and older to try on careers and learn during Summers @ Mizzou.

The annual program, sponsored by the University of Missouri Extension 4-H Center for Youth Development, gives students an opportunity to learn and explore the campus during these weeklong residential camps in July.

Sessions during the week of July 13-17 include:

  • The Stress of Life. Science buffs will learn to use smartphone apps and scientific instruments to collect data on how humans and animals experience and handle stress from their environments. Students will then analyze the data and prepare presentations.
  • Through Artist’s Eyes: A Studio Experience. Artists will explore their creativity using different techniques taught by MU professors, educators, professional artists and students who are passionate about art. There will be tours of galleries and museums as well.
  • Build-a-Business. Young would-be entrepreneurs gain tips on creating their own microbusinesses and earning their own income.
  • Scrub in to a Health Career. Campers will explore different health career options, listen to guest speakers and spend time at the University Hospital.

July 20-24 sessions include:

  • Future Internet Apps to Build Your Career. Students will learn basic programming to develop apps for Android phones to stream videos from popular multimedia sites.
  • Meet the “Big Muddy” Missouri River Academy. Water and wildlife lovers will learn about ecology, history and biology of aquatic life in the river ecosystem. As part of the Stream Team program, students will learn about managing floodplains and wetlands, and experience some hands-on learning.
  • Dog Days of Summer. Anyone considering a career in veterinary science will get a chance to practice lab skills, operate on mock patients and observe veterinarians as they work.
  • GeoTech. The latest geospatial technology will keep students on their toes as they geocache and create “mashups” on Google Earth. Students will use the geographic laboratory to plot data on maps from cave explorations and other outings.
