The Oklahoma State University/A&M Board of Regents today approved the request for the OSU College of Education to serve as a sponsor for the Advanced Science and Technology Education Charter Schools (ASTEC) in Oklahoma City.

Founded in 2000 with 100 middle school students and five employees, ASTEC has grown to 750 middle and high school students and 75 employees. The school uses research-based instruction and integrates math, science and technology with a liberal arts curriculum.

Technology is taught as a core subject and all students are engaged in character education. Also health and wellness conscious, ASTEC is the first HealthCorps school in Oklahoma.

“We are pleased to sponsor ASTEC, a school that provides our faculty and students with opportunities to work and conduct research with faculty, administration, and students in a charter school that has a 14-year history of success in serving a low socioeconomic status, linguistically diverse population,” said College of Education Dean Pamela “Sissi” Carroll.

ASTEC serves a predominantly racial, ethnic, and linguistic minority population of students who come from low-income homes.  It fosters a culture that prepares students for college (92 percent of ASTEC graduates enroll in college), specialized training and careers. It is located near the OSU-Oklahoma City campus.

“We also are excited that this collaboration with ASTEC could lead to new partnerships and new opportunities for students at our OSU-Oklahoma City campus,” Carroll said.
