There’s a lot of speculation and facts, even, that say 2009 is going to be a really hard year. There’s a lot of speculation and facts, even, that say 2009 is going to be a really hard year.
I’ve heard a lot of opinions on what the cattle markets may or may not do in ‘09. I’ve about determined if we’d all just turn off the T.V. and quit reading the big newspapers we’d not be near as worried as we are.
One thing’s for sure, this newspaper will always be reporting on the good things that are happening in the Ozarks’ agriculture industry. Think of the families that are still passing the farm on to the next generation, and of the young boys and girls who eagerly tell us each issue in our “Youth in Agriculture” section how they’re excited to return to the farm someday, and they have great plans for it.
A good banker friend of mine explained how many businesses here in the Ozarks are owned locally and regionally. As a result, we shield ourselves from some of the major problems that affect the nation.
As producers, we will have to improve our efficiency and productivity this year, but that’s something we already work toward, anyway. I encourage you to attend the many beef, feed and forage conferences coming this spring, and take good notes. Rely on the great resources found in our local Extension offices and USDA/FSA offices to get advice and tips for your farm.
There is positive news to be found in our region, and with regional agriculture. Let’s keep on the sunny side, despite whatever CNN, FOX News or MSNBC may say.
Blessings in 2009!

P.S. We still need recipes to keep ya'll eatin' good in 2009! Send yours in today!
