Ingredients:

1 package dry yeast

1 tsp. salt

1/4 C. warm water

1/8 C. sugar

1/2 tsp. baking soda

1 C. buttermilk

1 tsp. baking powder

Directions:

Dissolve the yeast in the warm water and set aside. Meanwhile, mix the dry ingredients in the order listed. Then cut the shortening into the dry ingredients. Next stir in the buttermilk and water and yeast mixture, blending thoroughly. Turn onto a floured board to knead lightly before rolling out and cutting with a biscuit cutter. Then place in a 9-by-13 pan and let rise until double. Then bake at 400 degrees until lightly browned. The dough can be refrigerated until you are ready to use it, which will increase the baking time.
